The Best Reason for Giving Thanks

The Best Reason for Giving Thanks

Giving thanks. How many times have you felt compelled to do that this past year? Giving thanks for not living in a war zone, that you are not awaiting the return of loved ones. Giving thanks for the fact that life does not have to be elaborate if you are able to express love, bring family together and offer them some sustenance. No wonder Thanksgiving is such a meaningful commemoration.

The beautiful old Shaker song ‘Simple Gifts’ begins with, ‘’Tis the gift to be simple, ’tis the gift to be free.’ Those words invite us to pause and notice the simple blessings all around — clean water, sunlight, fresh air, and rest.

Whatever your Thanksgiving involves, let it include taking some time to step outside to celebrate the simple gifts of nature. Breathe in that fresh air. Feel the sun or rain or wind on your face. Be among trees, grass, by water. Walk for as long as you like, wherever you can, because you can. Make each step—each breath—an act of gratitude.

And may this be a really meaningful Thanksgiving for you,
your friends and your families.
